Windows 98 SE (Service Edition) Full Version Windows 98 SE is a service pack and update to Windows 98, and its full release was on June 19, 1999. From Wikipedia: "The CD-ROM at the center of the original Windows 95/98 product package contains both the base operating system and a special edition called MSDN (Microsoft Developer Network), which consists of Windows-related technical articles, tools such as compilers and debuggers by Microsoft Research, programming examples, and precompiled header files for use with Microsoft Visual C++. The CD-ROM also includes three standard applications for viewing ".wmv" movies without requiring an Internet connection or local media player software." This OS uses the MS DOS 6. 22 kernel which is backward compatible with win9x. Windows 98 SE was later stripped of its MSDN content and marketed as the cheaper Windows 98 Second Edition (SE). It also includes Internet Explorer 4.01 in addition to Internet Explorer 5.0 (included with the original Windows 98), Winsock 1, and other enhancements over Windows 98. Microsoft originally did not intend for Windows 98 SE to be used on computers that already had Windows 95 or Windows 98 installed, but many users found that it worked well on their computer because it was not really very different from what they already had; this led Microsoft to change its position on the matter and allow use of SE on systems running older versions of Windows. Windows 98 SE introduces the Windows Driver Model. x86: Windows 98 SE can be installed by booting in MS-DOS mode from a Windows 98/98SE CD-ROM, copying the hard disk drivers from the CD to a temporary folder on the hard drive, and then executing setup.exe. This will make it possible to install Windows 98/98SE onto a FAT32 partition, but it requires an additional hack to make it run reasonably well, and also makes it unable to write to NTFS partitions. It does not support ACPI. x86: A workaround for this problem exists that involves patching setup. exe and copying the relevant hard disk drivers into the installation folder. x64: The workaround for this problem does not work because setup.exe is 16-bit and cannot be run under WOW64 (Windows on Windows 64-bit). The only supported way to install Windows 98 SE in a 64-bit environment is to use a multi-boot configuration with 32-bit versions of Windows 95/98/ME, or with a 32-bit version of Windows XP (although this has its own issues, such as lacking DEP and ASLR support in VirtualPC and in 32-bit versions of Windows XP). A derivative work of Windows 98 SE was released in 2000 called Windows ME (Millennium Edition) which in turn was also based on Windows 2000 Professional. x86: The installation procedure for Windows ME is similar to that of 98 SE. Windows ME can be installed by booting in MS-DOS mode from a Windows 98/98SE/ME CD-ROM, copying the hard disk drivers from the CD to a temporary folder on the hard drive, and then executing setup.exe. This will make it possible to install Windows ME onto an NTFS partition, but it requires an additional hack to make it run reasonably well, and also makes it unable to write to FAT32 partitions. It does not support ACPI. cfa1e77820
